TRIPURA VIOLENCE: TWO JOURNALISTS REPORTING ON GROUND DETAINED IN KARIMGANJ

Two women journalists who were reporting the anti-muslim violence in Tripura have been booked by the Assam Police at Nilambazaar in Karimganj district, close to the Tripura-Assam border on Sunday. Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha were earlier booked under sections on spreading communal disharmony, committing insults with intent to provoke breach of peace. The FIR against them was based on a complaint by local VHP activists and has been registered at the Fatikroy Police station in Unakoti district. “We have been detained at the Nilambazar police station, Karimganj, Assam. We were informed by the officer-in-charge of Nilambazar PS that SP of Gomti District gave the orders for our detention”, tweeted Sakunia. “Editors Guild condemns this action and demands their immediate release and restoration of their freedom to travel”, tweeted the Editors guild of India while retweeting the statement posted by Sakunia.

“Yes, they were detained. A team of Tripura Police officials from Dharmanagar has gone there (Nilambazaar) to bring them.”

The officer also said that a few videos posted by the journalists on social media had claimed that a prayer hall was burnt in Gomati district and a copy of the Quran was damaged. The videos are suspected to have been “doctored” said a senior police officer, reported the Indian Express. “Many people claimed the Quran was burnt during the acts of vandalism. We didn’t find any such evidence in the last 20 days. Investigation suggests that the video may have been doctored. We want to be sure if this was done in connivance with anyone or not. Therefore, the journalists have been detained,” he added.

In a tweet posted a few days ago, Sakunia says that on 19th October, a mosque in Darga Bazaar area was burnt down by some ‘unidentified people’. “People in the neighborhood are very upset with the fact that now they don’t have any place nearby to go and pray There’s no other masjid nearby”, she added.

“The BJP system is busy killing journalism. But when has the truth stopped in the face of lies? #Tripura #NoFear”, tweeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. “If there is anything wrong or if they have attempted to breach peace, there are sections of law that can be applied. At the behest of VHP, they can’t be charged and arrested. This is intolerance and very wrong”, said Tripura CPI(M) Secretary Jitendra Chaudhary.

SATIRE DRIVEN, NON-MELODRAMATIC, FOCUSED, AND METICULOUSLY SCRIPTED; THIS MOVIE IS A WINNER THROUGH AND THROUGH!

How can one dislike a film that entertains throughout? In english, this movie title means ‘The engagement is on monday’.  There is no surprise in the plot line; all of it is revealed in the title.  The story is about the making of an engagement and the joys and troubles involved.  Senna Hegde pulls off a regular story with exceptional craft. The highlight of the film is its climax.  The climax offers no pomp and show, no tearful departures, no melodramatic breakdowns, no revolutions, no rebellions, no glamour, not even the promised engagement. This film is a must watch not because it is extraordinary, but because it is very ordinary, and the brilliance is entirely in the balance the filmmaker maintained throughout.

KURUP, THE MOVIE; DULQUER’S ATTEMPT TO CONQUER CINEMASCOPE FILMMAKING LEAVES AUDIENCES EMOTIONLESS

THIS PERIOD MOVIE COMES WITH COMPLETE GRANDEUR; GRAND SETS, STYLE, A GOOD CAST, LEAVES NO STONE UNTURNED IN PRODUCTION, BUT FAILS IN ITS EDITING AND COMPOSITION. DQ DOES NOT BECOME KURUP, KURUP BECOMES DQ.

Dulquer remains Dulquer, we recognize him and his methods in all his movies and he repeats himself once again.  The actor lacks gravitas in his dialogue delivery and intonation.  Can style and glamour make up for lack of method acting in a role like this?  Did we expect more?
